Science-backed Weight Management Options

Sustainable weight management often involves more than lifestyle changes alone. Explore all the
different options that can support long-term progress.

Science-backed weight management options

Your Weight and your Heart are Connected

Obesity can place added strain on the heart and raise the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Working with a healthcare professional to manage weight can help reduce these risks, with
studies showing up to 5 times greater weight loss than self-managed efforts.

  • Losing 5-15% body weight can improve blood pressure in people with obesity.
  • Reducing 2.5% or more body weight can improve blood sugar control, in people with obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Even a 5-15% body fat loss can help improve cholesterol levels.

Managing Weight during Menopause

Menopause is a natural stage of life, but it can make weight easier to gain and
harder to lose. Understanding these changes can help you stay in control.

  • The rate of fat gain doubles and persists for roughly two years following menopause.
  • Hormonal shifts lead to decreased muscle mass and increased fat mass.
  • As oestrogen levels decline, visceral fat expands from 5–8% of total body weight to 10–15% post-menopause.

Weight Science

1. What is body mass index (BMI)?

Body mass index (BMI) is a screening tool that uses height and weight to help healthcare professionals assess weight categories that may be linked to health risks. BMI generally falls into four categories: Underweight (BMI of 18.5 or less), normal weight (BMI of 18.5-24.9), overweight (BMI of 25-29.9), or obesity (BMI of 30 or greater).

Weight Management

2. What is weight management?

Weight management involves achieving and maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding weight regain. There are various options, and what works for one person might not for another. Consult your healthcare provider to create your plan.

Weight Gain

3. What is considered overweight? What about obesity?

According to the World Health Organization, a BMI of 25 or higher is considered overweight, while a BMI of 30 or higher is classified as obesity. Obesity is recognised as a treatable disease influenced by multiple factors, including genetics, appetite hormones, environment, and behaviour. Because weight alone does not reflect overall health, BMI can serve as a starting point for discussing weight-management options with a healthcare professional.
